ARREST, GOOD FRIDAY & EASTER

Jesus led the disciples to a garden called Gethsemane. The disciples sat on the grass in the dark night.  They were tired.  “Stay here while I pray,” Jesus said to them. “Stay awake while I am gone and wait for me.”

Jesus walked into the garden and fell to the ground in prayer.  “Father, if it is possible, please don’t let me suffer.  But I will do what must be done.”

When Jesus returned, all the disciples were asleep.  He shook them awake—how could they not stay awake with him?

Just then, Judas arrived in the garden with a crowd of soldiers. He had made a plan to kiss the man they wanted to arrest. He walked up to Jesus and kissed him.  The soldiers arrested Jesus at once.  The disciples gasped in fear. Jesus was in trouble!  What if they were arrested, too? They ran from the garden and did precisely as Jesus had foreseen: they deserted him.

The authorities had arrested Jesus because the people called Jesus the King of the Jews.  Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, ordered him crucified on a cross. Pilate didn’t understand that Jesus was the King of Peace.

Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday and his body was taken to a tomb, closed by a giant stone, and guarded so no one would steal his body.

On Easter Sunday, Mary Magdalene and her friends went to anoint Jesus’ body—this was to prepare it for burial.  The women walked quietly to the tomb and wiped tears from their eyes.  They missed Jesus very much. When they arrived at the tomb, the ground began to shake beneath their feet.  An earthquake! Mary and the women were afraid. 

Then everything became still. The women approached the tomb and the huge stone had rolled it away! The women looked into the tomb and saw Jesus’ body was gone. Suddenly, an angel appeared dressed in dazzling white. “Don’t be afraid,” said the angel. “You are looking for Jesus, but he isn’t here. Jesus is alive! Go and tell his disciples.  Jesus is risen!”

Mary and her friends rushed to tell the other disciples.  Suddenly, Jesus appeared.

“Greetings,” he said.  “Go and tell my disciples I’m alive!”

The women raced down the road to share the good news.  Jesus is risen!

Afterwards, Jesus appeared to many people after his death and told them to share the good news: “I have died and come back to life for you.  You are forgiven for your sins.  God loves you.”

Arresto, Viernes Santo y Pascua 

Jesús llevó a los discípulos a un jardín llamado Getsemaní. Los discípulos se sentaron en la hierba en la noche oscura. Ellos estaban cansados. “Quédense aquí mientras oro”, les dijo Jesús. “Quédense despiertos mientras no estoy y espérenme”. 

Jesús caminó hacia el jardín y cayó al suelo en oración. “Padre, si es posible, por favor no me dejes sufrir. Pero haré lo que deba hacerse. 

Cuando Jesús regresó, todos los discípulos estaban dormidos. Los sacudió para despertarlos, ¿cómo podrían no permanecer despiertos con él? 

En ese momento, Judas llegó al jardín con una multitud de soldados. Había hecho un plan para besar al hombre que querían arrestar. Se acercó a Jesús y lo besó. Los soldados arrestaron a Jesús de inmediato. Los discípulos jadearon de miedo. ¡Jesús estaba en peligro! ¿Y si ellos también fueran arrestados? Huyeron del jardín e hicieron exactamente lo que Jesús había previsto: lo abandonaron. 

Las autoridades habían arrestado a Jesús porque la gente llamaba a Jesús el Rey de los Judíos. Poncio Pilato, el gobernador romano, lo mandó crucificar en una cruz. Pilato no entendió que Jesús era el Rey de la Paz. 

Jesús murió en la cruz el Viernes Santo y su cuerpo fue llevado a un sepulcro, cerrado con una piedra gigante y custodiado para que nadie robara su cuerpo. 

El Domingo de Resurrección, María Magdalena y sus amigas fueron a ungir el cuerpo de Jesús para prepararlo para el entierro. Las mujeres caminaron en silencio hacia la tumba y se secaron las lágrimas de los ojos. Extrañaban mucho a Jesús. Cuando llegaron a la tumba, el suelo empezó a temblar bajo sus pies. ¡Un terremoto! María y las mujeres tenían miedo. 

Entonces todo quedó en silencio. ¡Las mujeres se acercaron a la tumba y la enorme piedra había rodado! Las mujeres miraron dentro de la tumba y vieron que el cuerpo de Jesús ya no estaba. De repente, apareció un ángel vestido de un blanco deslumbrante. “No tengan miedo”, dijo el ángel. “Estáis buscando a Jesús, pero no está aquí. ¡Jesús está vivo! Ve y díselo a sus discípulos. ¡Jesús ha resucitado!” 

María y sus amigos se apresuraron a decírselo a los otros discípulos. De repente, apareció Jesús. 

“Saludos”, dijo. “¡Ve y dile a mis discípulos que estoy vivo!” 

Las mujeres corrieron por el camino para compartir las buenas noticias. ¡Jesús ha resucitado! 

Posteriormente, Jesús se apareció a muchas personas después de su muerte y les dijo que compartieran la buena noticia: “He muerto y he vuelto a la vida por ustedes. Estás perdonados por sus pecados. Dios te ama.”
